MARTA train from downtown Atlanta (Five Points Station) to Hartsfield-Jackson takes 38 minutes and costs $2.75 one-way — this is the cheapest option but trains run every 10-15 minutes and get packed. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) from downtown costs $18-26 during off-peak, $35-50 during surge, and takes 20-25 minutes depending on traffic. Hotel shuttles are free if you're staying nearby. Drive yourself only if you're leaving before 6am or after 9pm; otherwise expect 30-40 minute parking lot lines. The BeltLine Connector bus ($2.50) runs from downtown but adds 45 minutes total travel time.
Getting from PMI into Palma de Mallorca
PMI airport is 8km east of central Palma. Bus Line 1 (EMT) runs every 15–20 minutes to Plaça d'Espanya for €5 — journey takes about 30 minutes and is entirely reliable. Taxis from the official rank outside arrivals cost €25–35 to central Palma depending on traffic; always use the metered official taxis, not touts inside the terminal. Uber and Cabify both operate in Mallorca and typically run €18–25 to the city center with the advantage of booking in advance — recommended if you're arriving peak summer and the taxi queue is 40 minutes long. Car rental counters are inside the terminal; if you're going directly to a resort area or planning to drive the island, picking up the car at the airport makes sense.

Casco Antiguo (Old Town)
mid-rangeThe historic walled center of Palma is where you want to base yourself for a city-focused trip. Streets like Carrer de Sant Miquel and the Born promenade have excellent mid-range hotels in converted palaces — try Hotel Can Cera or Boutique Hotel Can Alomar. The neighborhood has the best restaurant concentration, is walkable to the cathedral and waterfront, and stays lively without being purely touristy.
Santa Catalina
mid-rangePalma's coolest neighborhood for eating and drinking — the Mercat de Santa Catalina is the local food market and the streets around it are packed with independent restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops that actually cater to residents. Hotel rates are slightly lower than Old Town. This is where you come for dinner at Bar España (the tortilla here is genuinely famous) or late-night vermouth at La Bodeguita.
Local planning tip
The vintage wooden train from Palma to Sóller (the Ferrocarril de Sóller, running since 1912) charges tourists €25 round-trip, but the regular TFSIB bus to Sóller costs €4 each way and takes the same 40 minutes — it runs multiple times daily and drops you right in the town center. Save the train for the experience if you want it, but don't feel obligated. More importantly: rent a car for at least one day and drive the MA-10 coastal road through the Tramuntana mountains from Valldemossa through Deià to Sóller. This drive is one of the best roads in Europe and it's completely free — just go slowly and leave early morning before the tourist buses clog the hairpin turns.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders do not need a visa for Spain or any Schengen Area country for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. As of 2026, the EU's ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is expected to be operational — this is a pre-travel authorization similar to an ESTA, costing approximately €7, valid for 3 years, and applied for online before departure. It is not a visa. Ensure your US passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from Spain. Spain is part of the Schengen Area, so your 90-day clock applies across all Schengen countries in a 180-day window, not just to Spain.
