About Belize City

Belize City is not where most people think their Belize trip begins and ends — and that's exactly right. The Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport is a transit hub, not a destination in itself. Most travelers clear customs and immediately hop a connector flight to Ambergris Caye, charter a boat to Caye Caulker, or rent a car toward San Ignacio. But if you give Belize City 24-48 hours, it rewards you with some of Central America's most authentic Caribbean street culture, a genuinely interesting colonial history, and food that's completely different from what you'll find in the tourist beach towns.

The city sits on a peninsula at the mouth of the Belize River, and its split personality is immediately obvious: the commercial Southside with its painted wooden buildings, bustling street food scene, and loud reggaeton is the real Belize City, while the quieter, slightly more tourist-oriented Fort George neighborhood near the Baron Bliss Lighthouse gives you a safer base to explore. The city is roughly 80,000 people and feels like it — tight, loud, and full of life. The Swing Bridge in the center of town is one of the last manually operated swing bridges in the Western Hemisphere and still opens twice daily to let boats through.

Flight deal seekers should know that BZE is served by American, United, and Delta from multiple US hubs, with the cheapest fares typically routing through Houston (IAH), Miami (MIA), or Atlanta (ATL). Southwest started BZE service from select cities in 2024, which genuinely drove prices down across the board. The sweet spot for airfare is typically late April through June, right before the rainy season, when prices drop 30-40% from peak winter rates and the country is still absolutely gorgeous.

For Americans, Belize has a massive practical advantage: English is the official language, the Belize dollar is pegged 2:1 to the USD (meaning US dollars are accepted virtually everywhere at that exact rate), and there's no language barrier at all. It's the only English-speaking country in Central America, which makes it uniquely accessible. The barrier reef — the second largest in the world — starts just offshore from Belize City and runs the length of the country, meaning world-class snorkeling and diving are a 45-minute water taxi ride away.

Airport to City: How to Get There

Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport is 9 miles (14km) northwest of the city center. Option 1: Taxi — the standard fixed rate is BZ$50 (US$25) to downtown Belize City or Fort George; negotiate before getting in and confirm it's the flat rate. Takes about 20-25 minutes depending on traffic on the Philip Goldson Highway. Option 2: Water taxi connection — most savvy travelers skip city transit entirely and take a shuttle van (BZ$25/US$12.50) from the airport to the Marine Terminal, then board a water taxi direct to Caye Caulker (US$17.50) or San Pedro/Ambergris Caye (US$32.50); Ocean Ferry Belize and San Pedro Belize Express both operate this route. Option 3: Domestic flights — Tropic Air and Maya Island Air have counters at the international terminal and run 15-minute hops to Ambergris Caye for around US$50-80 each way; pricier than water taxi but saves 90 minutes total.

Neighborhoods & Where to Stay

Fort George
mid-range

The safest and most tourist-friendly part of Belize City, clustered around the Baron Bliss Lighthouse on the northern peninsula. The Great House Inn, Villa Boscardi, and the Radisson Fort George Hotel (the nicest in the city center) are all here. The Chateau Caribbean restaurant on Marine Parade is the go-to for fresh snapper and lobster in a proper sit-down setting.

Southside / Albert Street
budget

The commercial and cultural heart of Belize City, centered on the Swing Bridge and Albert Street market. Extremely lively but requires awareness — petty theft is common for tourists who wander aimlessly. The best street food in the country is here: fry jacks, stew chicken, and rice and beans from open-air stalls around the central market. Don't flash cameras or phones.

Newtown Barracks / Kings Park
mid-range

A quieter residential area north of the center where many of the better guesthouses and small hotels are located, including D's Guest House and La Casona del Puerto. Less touristy than Fort George, more manageable than Southside. Local restaurants on Newtown Barracks Road serve the best plate lunches in the city for under BZ$15.

Buttonwood Bay
luxury

The upscale residential neighborhood where the Princess Hotel and Casino is located — really the only 'luxury' accommodation in the city proper. Not much to walk to, so you'll need taxis everywhere, but it's quieter and the hotel pool is genuinely nice. Most travelers with a true luxury budget skip the city entirely and fly direct to Ambergris Caye.

Daily Budget: What to Expect

Budget
$65/day

US$20-25 for a dorm bed or basic guesthouse in Fort George or Newtown, US$15 on street food (BZ$30 buys 2 full meals from Albert Street stalls), US$10 on water or local buses, US$15 on one paid activity like the Belize Museum admission or a guided Swing Bridge walk

Mid-Range
$175/day

US$80-100 for a private room at Great House Inn or Chateau Caribbean B&B, US$40 on meals at sit-down spots like Nerie's Restaurant (the best rice and beans in town) or Celebrity Restaurant, US$20 on taxis around the city, US$30-40 on a half-day snorkel trip or Museum of Belize entrance plus guided tour

Luxury
$400/day

US$200-250 per night at Radisson Fort George or Princess Hotel, US$80-100 on meals at Chateau Caribbean or upscale hotel dining, US$30 on private car transfers, US$80-100 on a full-day private tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Altun Ha ruins with a private guide

What to Eat in Belize City

1

Stew chicken with rice and beans at Nerie's Restaurant (Queen Street) — BZ$12 gets you a heaping plate of slow-braised chicken in recado sauce over coconut rice and kidney beans; this is the national dish and Nerie's has been doing it perfectly for 30 years

2

Fry jacks with eggs and refried beans from any morning street cart near the Swing Bridge — deep-fried pillows of dough served with scrambled eggs and black beans for BZ$6-8 total; eat these immediately after they come out of the oil

3

Conch fritters at Celebrity Restaurant (Regent Street) — lightly battered queen conch pieces fried crisp, served with a Marie Rose dipping sauce; order two rounds because you will want them

4

Boil-up on Saturday mornings from local vendors near the Marine Terminal — a traditional Belizean breakfast stew of fish, eggs, cassava, potatoes, and plaintain all cooked together in a light coconut broth; only available weekends and only from people who really know what they're doing

5

Belikin beer with a whole fried snapper at the Wet Lizard bar on the Tourism Village waterfront — not the cheapest option at BZ$35 for fish plus BZ$8 per Belikin, but the harbor view while eating fresh Belizean snapper is the quintessential Belize City experience before boarding your water taxi

Safety Tips

Belize City has a genuinely high violent crime rate by Central American standards — most of it is gang-related and concentrated in specific Southside neighborhoods. The tourist-relevant safety picture is more nuanced: petty theft (phone snatching, bag grabs) is the primary risk for visitors, and it's almost entirely avoidable. Walk Fort George and the Tourism Village during daylight with no valuables visible. Don't walk anywhere in Belize City after dark, period — take taxis, which cost BZ$10-15 for any short city trip. The Southside Albert Street area is fine during busy market hours with a companion but don't go alone. Tourism police patrol the Marine Terminal and Tourism Village area actively. The Museum of Belize and Fort George area near the Lighthouse are genuinely relaxed during the day. Keep your passport in your hotel safe and carry a photocopy. The city's reputation scares away many tourists, which actually means the areas that are safe feel pleasantly uncrowded. Most incidents involving tourists involve people ignoring these basics.

Insider Tip

Book your water taxi to Caye Caulker or San Pedro online before you land — Ocean Ferry Belize (oceanferrybelize.com) sells advance tickets and you can print or screenshot your confirmation. The boats fill up fast during peak season and the 2pm departure is the one most people miss scrambling to buy tickets at the window after a delayed flight. Also: the 2-for-1 BZD peg means you should never exchange USD to BZD at the airport — just pay in USD everywhere at the direct 2:1 rate, or if you need local currency, find a Scotiabank ATM in the city where rates are fair.
