About Lima

Lima has quietly become one of the most compelling food cities on the planet, and Americans are finally catching on. This is the city that gave the world ceviche, tiradito, lomo saltado, and causa — dishes that have spawned entire restaurant movements globally but taste completely different here, made with Peruvian aji amarillo, fresh Pacific fish pulled that morning, and techniques refined over centuries. Central, Maido, and Astrid & Gastón consistently rank among the world's top 50 restaurants, but you don't need to drop $300 a head to eat brilliantly — a cevichería in Surquillo or Barranco will destroy your expectations for under $15.

Beyond the food, Lima is the gateway to the rest of Peru. Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, the Amazon, and the Nazca Lines all route through Jorge Chávez International Airport. Smart travelers spend 2-3 nights in Lima before and after their Peru adventure rather than treating it as a layover city — the Miraflores clifftops, the Larco Museum's 45,000-piece pre-Columbian collection, and the colonial architecture of the Historic Center more than justify the extra days. Flight prices to Lima from the US are also historically reasonable, often cheaper than European destinations.

Lima's geography is unlike any city you've visited. It sits in a coastal desert where it almost never rains, yet fog rolls in off the Pacific from June through November, blanketing the city in a grey marine layer called garúa. Most Americans arrive expecting tropical heat and are confused by the cool, overcast winters — average highs in July are only 62°F. Summer (December–March) brings sunshine and warmth, which is when Lima is at its liveliest. The city of 11 million sprawls enormously, but tourists primarily stick to the safe, walkable districts of Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro on the Pacific cliff edge.

Practically speaking, Lima is very accessible for Americans. No visa required, dollars are widely accepted alongside soles, English is spoken at most tourist-facing businesses, and the food and water safety in upper-tier restaurants is not a major concern if you're sensible. Petty crime exists — pickpocketing in the Historic Center and taxi scams at the airport are the main issues — but Lima is far safer than its reputation suggests if you stay in the main tourist districts. Fly in on LATAM, American, Delta, or United, spend $60–80/night on a great boutique hotel in Barranco, and eat your way through one of the most underrated food cities Americans have access to.

US passport holders do not need a visa for Peru. You receive a tourist entry permit (Tarjeta Andina de Migración) allowing stays of up to 183 days, stamped in your passport on arrival at LIM. No advance registration required. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date. There is no tourist tax at LIM airport for arrivals — exit fees are included in airfare. Keep your entry card safe as you'll need to surrender it on departure. If you lose it, get a replacement at Migraciones before your flight (annoying but doable). No vaccinations are required for Lima specifically, but Yellow Fever vaccination is required if you're coming from or going to the Peruvian jungle (Amazon region) and is strongly recommended regardless.

Airport to City: How to Get There

Taxi via official airport taxi counter (inside arrivals hall): S/65–80 (~$17–21) to Miraflores, S/55–65 (~$14–17) to San Isidro — takes 25–45 min depending on traffic, longer during rush hour. Do NOT take taxis from touts approaching you outside. Uber and Cabify work reliably from the airport for S/35–55 (~$9–14) to Miraflores — open the app inside arrivals before going out. There is no public transit option worth taking from LIM with luggage; the bus system is confusing and slow for newcomers. Budget travelers can take the bus route to Miraflores for under S/3 but it involves a 10-min walk to the stop and 45-60 min travel — only viable if you're going light.

Neighborhoods & Where to Stay

Miraflores
mid-range

The main tourist hub sitting on Pacific cliffs with manicured parks, Larcomar mall built into the clifftop, and wall-to-wall restaurants. Safe to walk at night, ATMs everywhere, English widely spoken. Stay at the boutique JW Marriott or Hotel B Miraflores (~$120–200/night) if splurging, or Casa Andina Standard for a reliable mid-range at $70–90.

Barranco
mid-range

Lima's Bohemian art district one neighborhood south of Miraflores — colorful colonial houses, the famous Bridge of Sighs, craft breweries, and cevicherías alongside galleries and boutique hotels. More atmospheric and local-feeling than Miraflores. Base here if you care about food and nightlife over hotel amenities; the 3BR Hostal Gemina or La Paisana boutique hotel hit $60–100/night.

San Isidro
luxury

Lima's financial and diplomatic district with wide tree-lined boulevards, golf course, and the city's highest-end hotels including the Country Club Lima Hotel and Westin. Best for business travelers or those wanting pure luxury and maximum security — quieter at night than Miraflores with fewer restaurant options within walking distance. Rooms run $150–350+/night.

Historic Center (Centro Histórico)
budget

UNESCO World Heritage colonial core with the Plaza Mayor, Cathedral, and incredible 16th–18th century architecture. Don't stay here overnight — it empties after dark and pickpocketing is a real issue — but spend a half-day here on a guided tour or Metropolitano bus day trip. The Convento de San Francisco with its catacombs is the single must-see sight in Lima.

Surquillo
budget

Immediately adjacent to Miraflores but decidedly local — this is where Lima's chefs shop at Mercado Surquillo #1 and where you find the best no-frills cevicherías and Peruvian lunch spots for S/25–40 ($6–10) that blow away tourist-facing equivalents. Not a place to wander at night, but a short Uber from Miraflores for daytime market and food exploration.

Daily Budget: What to Expect

Budget
$55/day

$12 hostel dorm (Flying Dog or Hitchhikers in Miraflores), $20 food (S/15 market breakfast, S/35 lunch menú del día, S/25 street food dinner), $8 transport (Uber/bus), $15 activities (Larco Museum $15, free parks and Historic Center)

Mid-Range
$140/day

$75 boutique hotel in Barranco or Miraflores, $45 food (café breakfast, mid-range cevichería lunch at La Mar or El Mercado, nice dinner with pisco sours), $10 transport (Uber everywhere), $10 activities (one paid museum, free clifftop walks)

Luxury
$380/day

$200 JW Marriott or Country Club Lima Hotel, $120 food (breakfast at hotel, tasting menu at Central or Maido requires advance reservation and runs $150–250pp, lighter other meals), $20 transport, $40 private museum tour or cooking class at Lima Gourmet Company

What to Eat in Lima

1

Ceviche clásico at La Mar (Miraflores) or Chez Wong (reservations essential) — chunks of corvina or flounder cured seconds in tiger's milk (leche de tigre) with aji limo, red onion, and cancha corn. Nothing like the ceviche you've had elsewhere. Order it as your first course and drink the leche de tigre from the bowl.

2

Lomo saltado at Tanta or any classic huarique — stir-fried beef tenderloin with tomatoes, yellow aji peppers, soy sauce, and cilantro served over rice AND french fries. This is the perfect fusion of Chinese-Peruvian chifa cooking that's been feeding Lima for 150 years. Get it for lunch, not dinner.

3

Menú del día lunch at Mercado Surquillo or any local restaurant — for S/20–35 ($5–9) you get soup, a main with rice and salad, and juice. This is how Lima actually eats on weekdays and it's the single best value meal on earth. Look for handwritten chalkboard menus around 1pm.

4

Pisco sour at Bar Inglés inside the Country Club Lima Hotel or at Huaringas Bar in Miraflores — the Peruvian national cocktail made with pisco brandy, lime juice, egg white, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters. The foam should be thick enough to hold a sprinkle of bitters. Peru and Chile both claim it; in Lima, this argument is settled.

5

Tasting menu at Central (book 2–3 months ahead via their website) or Kjolle for something more accessible — chef Virgilio Martínez's concept of 'elevations' takes ingredients from sea level to 14,000 feet across 12+ courses. It's $200–250pp but represents perhaps the most unique fine dining experience in the Americas. Kjolle next door, run by his wife Pía León, is excellent at half the price.

Safety Tips

Lima is manageable for tourists who stay in Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro — these districts are as safe as most major US cities. The Historic Center requires attention: keep phones in pockets, don't display DSLR cameras on straps, and take an Uber rather than walk far from the Plaza Mayor at any hour. Never take unmarked taxis hailed from the street — Lima has an ongoing problem with 'taxi colectivo' robberies where fake taxis add accomplices mid-ride. Always use Uber, Cabify, or pre-arranged hotel taxis. At the airport, book your taxi inside at the official counter or open Uber before you walk out the doors. ATMs inside supermarkets (Wong, Vivanda) are safer than street ATMs. Altitude isn't an issue in Lima itself (sea level) but if you're continuing to Cusco, Lima is not where acclimatization happens — you need days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Your biggest health risk is actually traveler's diarrhea — eat ceviche and raw dishes only at reputable restaurants, drink bottled water, and carry Imodium. The drinking water in Lima is technically treated but not reliable enough for tourist stomachs.

Insider Tip

Book your Central or Maido reservation before you book your flights — seriously. Tables open exactly 60 days in advance on their websites and are gone within hours. If you want to eat at either restaurant (and you should — Maido's Nikkei tasting menu is arguably more accessible and just as brilliant as Central at $120pp vs $230pp), this is non-negotiable trip planning step #1. Also: fly into Lima on the late-night red-eye from Miami or New York, arrive at 5-6am, store your bags at the airport left-luggage counter (S/15/bag), take an Uber to Miraflores, and eat breakfast at a bakery until your hotel room is ready at 2pm — you lose no travel day and often save $150+ vs booking an extra night.
