Lyft/Uber from downtown Nashville runs $18-28 (15-20 min, surge pricing 6-9am). Rental car via Nashville/I-40 East is 20 min, $85-120/day for economy at the off-site lot. WeRide shuttle from downtown hotels is flat $20/person one-way, takes 25-30 min, departs hourly 5am-11pm. Public transit (MTA bus 18) is $2.75, runs every 30 min, but takes 50+ min from downtown—only use this if you have zero time pressure. Parking at the airport itself: short-term $2/hour, long-term $12/day, economy $10/day (no free shuttle, 3 min walk). For trips over 5 days, off-site BNA economy lots via Avis/Hertz are $6-8/day but require shuttle time.
Getting from MUC into Munich
The S-Bahn (S1 or S8 lines) is the standard option: 40-45 minutes to Marienplatz or Hauptbahnhof (main train station), costing €13.60 for a single ticket or €26 for a day pass that covers the whole network. Buy at the MVV machines before boarding — you must validate before entering the platform. The Lufthansa Airport Bus runs directly to the Hauptbahnhof in about 45 minutes for €11 each way or €17.50 roundtrip, no connection required, and it's a comfortable coach. Taxi or rideshare (Uber works) costs €60-80 depending on traffic and destination — not worth it unless you're traveling with 3+ people or have a lot of luggage.
Planning Nashville to Munich
Munich punches above its weight for a city of 1.5 million. It's simultaneously the beer hall capital of the world, a serious art museum city, and the gateway to the Bavarian Alps — all wrapped in a level of cleanliness and order that makes American cities look embarrassing. The old city center is genuinely gorgeous without being fake-touristy, and the locals actually use the Englischer Garten for sunbathing and river surfing, not just photo ops. If you've only associated Munich with Oktoberfest, you're missing 95% of what makes it worth flying across the Atlantic.

Altstadt (Old Town)
luxuryThe historic core around Marienplatz and Maximilianstrasse — beautiful to walk through but pricey to sleep in. Hotels here run €180-400+/night and restaurants cater heavily to tourists. Worth splurging for Mandarin Oriental or Hotel Bayerischer Hof if budget allows; otherwise stay elsewhere and visit on foot.
Schwabing
mid-rangeThe traditional bohemian neighborhood north of the Englischer Garten, with good independent restaurants, wine bars, and a younger local feel. Leopoldstrasse is the main strip but the side streets are where you actually want to eat and drink. Hotels here run €90-160/night and you're a 10-minute walk from the park.
Local planning tip
Buy a Bayern Ticket (€29 for one person, €6 for each additional person up to 5 people total) at any MVV machine or DB app on weekdays after 9am or any time on weekends. It covers all regional trains and local transit within Bavaria for the entire day — meaning you can take the S-Bahn to the airport, board a regional train to Salzburg (1.5 hours), Berchtesgaden (2 hours), or Garmisch-Partenkirchen (1.5 hours), and return to Munich, all for €29. It's one of the best-value single tickets in European rail and most American tourists have no idea it exists.
Visa and entry notes for US travelers
US passport holders don't need a visa for Germany or any Schengen country for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No advance authorization required in 2025-2026 — ETIAS, the EU's new travel authorization system, has been delayed repeatedly and is not yet required as of 2026. Just show up with a valid US passport (must be valid for the duration of your stay; technically 3 months beyond your departure date is recommended). No Schengen visa, no tourist tax forms, nothing. If you're planning to visit other Schengen countries on the same trip, your 90-day clock covers all of them combined.
